Project 2 Proposal

For this project I want to focus on the theme of "FOMO" or the "fear of missing out". In high school I struggled a lot with this. I had plenty of what I thought were friends at the time, but nothing was ever right. They were my friends, but something was always off. My two closest friends had been best friends since birth basically so I almost always felt like a third wheel. It didn't stop with that though I felt left out 99% of the time too. My friends would always hang out, go to the movies, go out to eat, etc. and I wouldn't be invited. During this time, I felt as though it was on purpose and that I didn't have any real friends. For this project, I want to focus on the concept of "FOMO" and how it can make someone feel. I'm going to either use my bedroom or the living room for the setting of this project, I'm not sure what will work better yet. I want to capture videos/pictures of my friends doing fun things or find some that I a

For this project, I have chose to title it Senses because the 5 senses are my main theme around this installation. Sometimes I think and believe that I have heightened senses, some more than others and I wanted to try to capture that. For me, hearing is the one that "acts up" the most. I find myself to be very sensitive to noises, in this case annoying noises.  People smacking/crunching their food is the main discomforting noise for me, which is why I chose to show that in this project. I decided to keep the audio from these videos of me eating annoying foods (apple, chips, popcorn) to really show the discomfort I get from these noises.  As for the other senses, my sense of smell would probably be next on the list because I have really bad allergies, not only to animals but to pretty much everything outdoors. A good majority of the year, I have troubles breathing through my nose because of my allergies acting up. For taste, I have always been a somewhat picky eater so I usu

I have now assembled all of my video and have begun working with it in MadMapper to work on color and effects. As of now, I have gone for more warmer colors depending on what sense is being projected onto the object. From left to right, it is sight, then touch, and the third is both taste and sound.  My current struggle is trying to figure out how to incorporate smell as well. I might bring a strong scent such as peppermint or a cleaner smell, and put it on some of the objects so that the smell projects from the actual objects.

I have now figured out exactly what I plan to project on. I have a trash can that is clear, but somewhat foggy looking as well, the middle is a pillow wrapped in a blanket (for texture purposes), and the third is a box wrapped in plastic bags (also for texture purposes).

Process 1 | Project 1

Currently, I think I have figured out what I want to take videos of and what to project. I know that I want to have different videos of each sense being represented (hands feeling different things, different people's eyes looking around, etc.) Originally I was going to include our 6th sense, but now I'm leaning towards more just sticking towards the main 5. My biggest struggle right now is figuring out exactly what I want to project onto. I have not been able to come up with a solid plan for that yet. In the meantime I plan on just getting all my video done and edited and figuring out the objects soon.

Artist Research | Camille Utterback

Light Field Camille Utterback Camille Utterback's Light Field is an installation using pieces of blown glass and mini projectors. I chose this piece because it's gorgeous and very appealing to the eye. At first, it is almost hard to tell what kind of images/videos are being projected onto the glasses, but after reading in the artist statements saying that she shot the videos in the meadows close to Pilchuck Glass School, where she was in residence nearby, it is easy to see her inspiration.  What interests me a lot about this work is that she worked with other artists in their specific areas of expertise to come up with a piece of art together. The film, the projection mapping, the glass, and the table fabrication were all done by someone different. The projected light onto glass and opaque chips and curves on the glass is very captivating. She uses the curves and chips to her advantage, knowing that the projection will curve on those edges. There are a total of 8

For this project I want to incorporate the 5 senses plus the 6th sense to show that we use our senses for more than we know. Seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling are the 5 that everyone knows about, while the 6th sense, the actual sense of knowing without knowing how you know (extrasensory perception) is one we don't consider often. Some people may not believe in this sort of thing, however, we all sometimes get that feeling of knowing when something is going to happen or knowing when someone is watching us, etc.  I want to capture all of these senses in their different ways and meaning and combine them into each their own quadrant, for a total of 6. I want to display them almost in a pyramid scheme to show that the main 5 senses are what contribute to our 6th sense. In doing so, I am going to use boxes of different sizes and shapes to create this look. I would like to get all of the materials put together as soon as possible so that I can start practicing and as

About Me

Image
My name is Mariah and I'm a senior Digital Arts major here at UT. My favorite part of this major is animation, 2D in particular, and that is what I really would love to pursue after graduation. While I'm still considering grad school, I'm still not sure my exact plans for after graduation in May.  I am originally from a small town in Missouri. I am a huge Disney fanatic and grew up going there almost every year since I was born, I even worked there this summer and last year. I love to draw and watch movies. I am surprisingly more excited for this class than I originally thought I would be after attending the first class. I think it is going to be really fun and broaden up my skills even more.
